Because race day introduces variables that your Tuesday brick session never will: crowd energy that kills your pacing discipline, water temperatures that swing 10 degrees from your training lake, and a body running on pre-race nerves instead of routine. Your gear needs to account for all of that. And often, the kit you trained in simply doesn’t.
This isn’t about going out and buying new equipment the week before your A-race. It’s about understanding where the ‘train like you race’ rule actually breaks down — and making smarter kit decisions before you toe the line.
The Trisuit Problem: Comfort in Training vs. Speed on Race Day
Most triathletes train in what’s comfortable. Padded shorts, a loose tri-top, maybe a two-piece setup that’s easy to pull on after an open-water swim. That’s fine for a four-hour training block. On race day, it might be costing you time.
A race-optimized trisuit — something like the Castelli Free Sanremo or the Orca Athlex Aero — is cut tighter, uses aero fabrics on the front panels, and minimizes drag on the bike without the bulk that slows your run. The chamois pad is deliberately thinner than what you’d want on a training ride, because race pace on the bike is faster, your position is more locked in, and you’re not sitting in the saddle for five hours of easy spinning.
The trade-off is real: a race-day trisuit can feel stiff and restrictive in a 90-minute training ride. That’s why athletes reject it. Footwear: Where ‘Familiar’ Becomes a Liability
Running shoes are the gear category where athletes are most emotionally attached to familiarity. And it’s the one area where race-day conditions should absolutely change your selection.
If you’re racing an Olympic-distance or sprint event, a lighter, more responsive shoe — think ASICS Metaspeed Sky or New Balance FuelCell SC Elite — is worth the trade-off in cushioning. You’re running 5-10K at near-maximum effort, not logging a long training run. The extra 60-80 grams per shoe that feels negligible in training is a measurable drag at race pace over 40 minutes.
For 70.3 and full-distance racing, the calculus shifts. Here, the shoe you can sustain for 13-26 miles matters more than peak responsiveness. But even then, check your heel-to-toe drop. Many athletes train in stability shoes with 8-10mm drop and then wonder why their calves blow up late in the run when they switch to a race-day shoe with 4mm drop. That’s not a race-day decision — it’s a training periodization mistake that compounds on race day.
Heat Management: The Variable Training Never Replicates
Unless you’re training in conditions that exactly match your race venue — same time of day, same humidity, same sun exposure — your training kit choices aren’t giving you accurate heat feedback.
This matters for two specific decisions: wetsuit choice and helmet selection.
On the wetsuit side, a full-sleeve suit like the Zone3 Vanquish adds buoyancy and speed but traps heat. Accessories That Train Well but Race Poorly

Heart rate chest straps — fine in training, but the swim causes slippage and most athletes ignore the data on race day anyway. Optical wrist-based HR through your GPS watch does the same job without the adjustment stop in T1.
Full-finger gloves — useful on cold training rides, but if race-day temps are above 15°C, they slow down your grip on gels and create unnecessary heat retention.
Oversized nutrition vests — on long training runs, carrying 500ml of fluid and six gels makes sense. In a race with aid stations every mile, you’re carrying dead weight.
