You finish a 90-minute brick workout, sync your Garmin Forerunner 965 or Polar Vantage V3, and spend the next 20 minutes scrolling through body battery scores, training load peaks, sleep pulse ox readings, and a VO2 max estimate that hasn’t moved in six weeks. You feel like you’re being diligent. You’re mostly just procrastinating.
GPS watches have become one of the most important purchases in triathlon training — and one of the most misused. If you’re carrying a $500–$700 device on your wrist and making training decisions based on three metrics while ignoring forty others, this is for you.
Here’s the honest breakdown of what the data is actually for.
The Metrics That Genuinely Change What You Do in the Water
Swim tracking on most GPS watches is the weakest link, and that’s worth knowing upfront. SWOLF score — a combined measure of stroke rate and distance per stroke — is probably the most useful swim metric your watch produces. If your SWOLF is drifting up as a set progresses, your technique is breaking down under fatigue. That’s actionable.
Pace per 100m is useful for setting interval targets, but only if you’re swimming in a pool where the GPS isn’t doing the distance math. Open water pace figures from watches are noisy enough that you shouldn’t base effort decisions on them in real time.
Stroke count per length matters. Heart rate during swim sets, captured by wrist optical sensors? Generally unreliable in the water. If HR data from swimming is part of your training prescription, a chest strap with swim memory like the Polar H10 is a better tool than your watch’s wrist sensor.
What Bike Data Is Worth Acting On
Power is the anchor metric for bike training, and if your watch connects to a power meter — whether that’s a Garmin Rally pedal system, a Stages crank, or a Favero Assioma — then normalized power, average power, and intensity factor are genuinely useful training load inputs. Without a power meter, speed and average pace on the bike are too influenced by wind, terrain, and drafting to be reliable effort markers.
Heart rate is the next most useful, particularly for longer efforts where cardiac drift tells you something real about fatigue and fueling. If your HR is climbing while power stays flat on a 3-hour ride, that’s a signal about hydration and nutrition that should change what you do the next hour.
Grade-adjusted metrics, training load charts, and recovery time estimates? These are directional, not prescriptive. Use them as loose context, not gospel.
Run Metrics That Earn Their Screen Space
Running pace and heart rate together remain the most reliable combination for most amateur triathletes. For brick runs especially, watching HR against perceived effort gives you an honest read on where you are physiologically after the bike.
Cadence is underrated. Most recreational runners average 155–165 steps per minute; most running coaches target 170–180. If your watch shows you’re consistently below 165, shortening your stride slightly is a cue worth acting on — it’s directly tied to injury risk and efficiency.
Vertical oscillation and ground contact time show up on Garmin and Polar devices and look impressive. Unless you have baseline numbers from healthy training and a clear change after an injury or form adjustment, these figures mostly tell you you’re human.
Running power — from a footpod like the Stryd or wrist-estimated on newer Garmins — is genuinely useful for hill-adjusted pacing and effort normalization. It’s still more complex to use well than cycling power, but it’s worth learning if you’re training seriously.
The Stuff You Can Safely Scroll Past
Body battery, stress scores, sleep stage breakdowns, respiration rate, and SpO2 readings are lifestyle metrics that triathlon training watches borrowed from wellness trackers. They’re not useless, but they rarely change a training decision.
If your body battery says 32 after a rough night and you feel terrible, you already knew that. If it says 32 and you feel fine, you’ll probably still do the workout. These scores can reinforce what you already sense — they rarely override it in useful ways.
Training status labels like “peaking” or “unproductive” are algorithms working with incomplete information. They don’t know you’re tapering for a race or coming off illness. Take them with appropriate skepticism.
A Simpler Way to Think About Your Watch Data
Here’s a practical filter: if a metric can change what you do during the session or between sessions, it earns attention. If it only changes how you feel about the session after the fact, it’s just noise with a good UI.
For most triathletes, that means about six to eight metrics actually matter across the three disciplines. The rest is there because data collection is cheap and comprehensive dashboards sell watches.
